
Ms Linda Burney, MP
Prior to the New South Wales 2003 elections, Linda Burney, was one of the state's senior Aboriginal bureaucrats as the director-general of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs.
On 22 March 2003, she made history to become the first Aboriginal person elected to parliament standing as an ALP candidate for the western Sydney seat of
Canterbury.
Linda Burney is a member of the Wiradjuri Nation. She has a high
profile nationally both in Aboriginal Affairs and in the mainstream
education and training community.
She was raised in a small farming community near Leeton and commenced
her professional career as a teacher in Western Sydney after becoming the
first Aboriginal student to complete a Diploma of Teaching at Mitchell
CAE. She went on to play a pioneering role in the development of
Aboriginal Education programs in Australia, working in the Aboriginal
Education unit of the NSW Department of Education.
She is President of the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, a
member of the NSW board of Vocational Education and Training, and a
Director of SBS (Special Broadcasting Service). She holds and has held
numerous other positions relating to the education and the advancement of
Aboriginal education.
