Message Stick Communications Pty Ltd is Australia's first
Aboriginal national telecommunications service provider.
The Message Stick business seeks no funding, donations,
sponsorship or handouts of any type from private or Government
sources. The business seeks only to be given the chance to
demonstrate that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can
manage commercial relationships and responsibilities as
effectively as other Australians.
The company is majority owned and managed by Indigenous
Australians. The CEO is Indigenous and at all times the majority
of management and staff will be Indigenous Australians.
In the spirit of reconciliation the business had both Indigenous
and non-Indigenous shareholders.
Message Stick has been established to provide the highest quality
voice and data telephony and internet telecommunications services
at competitive prices and service levels. Initially these services
will be provided to large corporate and Government agencies -
those organisations that have a desire to engage and support
legitimate Indigenous business interests.
At the heart of this business model is the concept that Indigenous
Australian's need to break away from the debilitating effects of
the "social dependency cycle" that traps generation after
generation. An effective way to do this is to gain economic
independence by actively participating in our economy.
Message Stick aims to be one example of a business model that
shows how Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians can work
together to produce meaningful and sustainable economic outcomes.
As an incorporated entity and Australian business registered with
ASIC, message Stick will continually observe best practise
corporate governance principles as they relate to an Australian
company. Message Stick and ASX are currently discussing a
"Corporate Governance Mentor" relationship.
As a Service Provider in the telecommunications sector, Message
Stick observes obligations provided in the regulatory framework
under the Telecommunications Act 1997, the Telecommunications
(Consumer Protection and Service Standards) Act 1999, the Trade
Practices Act 1974 and the Australian Communications Authority.
